(Calgary) The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has removed the men’s downhill event at Lake Louise from its tentative schedule for next season.
The FIS had initially entered the event from November 22nd to 26th in its calendar with the note “to be confirmed”. However, Alpine Canada announced on Friday that the federation had run out of time to raise the necessary funds to present the races.
Alpine Canada President and CEO Thérèse Brisson said the organization remains committed to bringing a speed event to Western Canada and is exploring solutions for the 2024-25 season.
The stop in Lake Louise traditionally marked the start of the men’s speed season. However, if the Lake Louise downhill had taken place, it would have been the second speed event this season.
Alpine Canada has already replaced the traditional women’s downhill at Lake Louise, which is normally held a week after the men’s downhill, by hosting two giant slalom events at Mont-Tremblant on December 2nd and 3rd. The presentation of these races has been confirmed.
