Winnipeg: No digging at landfill, PM affirms

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson is defending the decision not to have a Winnipeg-area grave site searched for the remains of two missing Indigenous women.

Stefanson cites a Canadian government-funded technical study that found a search could take up to three years, posed a health and safety risk to workers, and offered no guarantee of success.

A few days ago, dozens of protesters blocked access to a landfill site in Winnipeg and vowed to continue protests elsewhere pending an operation to find the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran at the private Prairie Green landfill site north of the city .

Last Friday, the city issued an executive order late in the afternoon, urging protesters to restore full access to the landfill before the stroke of noon on Monday. But as the deadline approached, protesters tightened the blockade by spreading large wooden planks and dozens of tires on the street.

A Winnipeg city official said he does not expect police to intervene immediately and that the next step will likely be to seek a court restraining order Tuesday.
