After just one season at the helm of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Mike Babcock tendered his resignation Thursday.
The 59-year-old coach, who has 1,301 games behind the bench in the National Hockey League (NHL), worked full-time for the Huskies organization for about a year and a half.
He will be replaced next season by assistant coach Brandin Cote, who will fill the role on an interim basis.
“I’m happy for Brandin and his family,” Babcock said in a statement. He is ready to become a very successful coach.”
Under Babcock, the Huskies advanced 14-9 to the Quarterfinals of the U SPORTS Western Canada Division.
Recall that Babcock was fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019 after more than four seasons at the helm of the team.
Additionally, several former established NHL players, including Mike Modano and Johan Franzen, have publicly criticized him for his archaic learning methods and intransigence.
Babcock has exactly 700 wins at the Bettman Circuit, he who also led the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Red Wings of Detroit. He won his only Stanley Cup with the Michigan team in 2008.
He also led Canada to consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014.
