There will definitely be no shortage of goalkeepers in the Canadian’s organisation. The Laval Rocket have signed a one-year deal with Zachary Émond, the team announced Tuesday morning.
Émond signed a two-way contract (American League and ECHL) and therefore would not be eligible for a recall to the NHL unless he signed a new contract. Should he fail to earn a spot with the Rockets, he could play for the Trois-Rivières Lions.
Émond, 23, played just four games last season, all for the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL. He was 3-1-0 with a 2.22 GAA and a .936 save percentage. However, hip problems had been plaguing him for a number of years, so he had to undergo surgery in February. He will be ready for camp in September, we are told.
Drafted by the Sharks at 6ame At the turn of 2018, Émond was traded to the Devils organization the previous winter, which sent forward Timo Meier to New Jersey. However, his season was already over and the transfer was just a matter of contract count.
Émond has never played in the NHL and has 12 games in the American League, all in the 2021-2022 period. He had shown an average of 4.48 and an efficiency of .867.
His hiring was announced the day after Strauss Mann’s. However, the latter signed a one-way contract with the American League. In theory, this puts him ahead of Émond in the hierarchy.
CH therefore has six professional goaltenders in its three organizations (Canadian, Rocket, Lions) org chart for next season: Émond, Mann, Cayden Primeau, Jakub Dobes, Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault. However, keep in mind that Primeau is eligible for waivers this fall and will therefore have to do so if he is unable to snag a position in Montreal.
