The Canadiens have agreed to a one-year deal with center Lias Andersson.
The team announced this on Sunday afternoon. The deal will net Andersson $775,000 if he plays in the NHL and $450,000 if he plays in the American League.
The 24-year-old forward, who has been an unrestricted free agent since Saturday, has spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings organization. He played all of last season in the American League for Ontario Reign, amassing 59 points, including 31 goals, in 67 games.
The Swede is a former first-round pick (7the overall) of Rangers in 2017. At the time, Jeff Gorton was Rangers General Manager and Nick Bobrov was Europe Recruiting Director. In the past six years, Andersson has appeared in 110 NHL games, scoring 17 points.
Andersson is best known for a gesture he made during the 2018 World Junior Championships. As captain of the Sweden team, he threw his silver medal into the stands in frustration after a 3-1 defeat by Canada in the final of the tournament. He was suspended by the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) for the gesture.
