Several Team Canada athletes are in action this weekend. The World Athletics Championships begin on Saturday. The Canadian team, which won a total of four medals at World Championships last year, is in a good position to improve on that record.
The women’s and men’s rugby teams have the opportunity to qualify for Paris 2024 at a tournament on Canadian soil in Langford. The Canada women’s 3×3 basketball team, based out of Quebec City, is aiming to triumph in Canada in the FIBA women’s 3×3 series for the second time this season.
After winning a stage of the Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 in front of their fans in Montreal two to three weeks ago, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson are looking to repeat their performance on the Hamburg stage this weekend. For their part, some Canadian archers have the opportunity to test the facilities used for the Olympic archery competitions in Paris.
Here are the sports to watch this weekend so you don’t miss any of Team Canada’s performances.
athletics
The World Athletics Championships begin this weekend in Budapest, Hungary. Team Canada is represented by a strong team of 53 athletes aiming to improve on last year’s medal record, which included gold in the men’s 4x100m relay, Pierce’s silver-LePage in the decathlon, silver for Camryn Rogers in the Women’s hammer throw included bronze for Marco Arop in the men’s 800m.

Evan Dunfee is the first Canadian in action. He took part in the first discipline of the competition, the 20 km run. Dunfee is a World Championship bronze medalist and Olympic bronze medalist in the 50K. This is his first appearance in the 20K World Championships in seven years.
Also on Saturday, Ethan Katzberg will compete in the men’s hammer throw qualifier, aiming to advance to the finals on Sunday. At just 21, Katzberg arrives in Budapest third in the world after a year of impressive progress. Mohammed Ahmed will start in the men’s 10,000m on Sunday. Ahmed is also competing at these World Championships in the 5,000m, where he won the Olympic silver medal in Tokyo 2020.
Brendon Rodney and Jerome Blake, members of last year’s gold medal-winning relay team, will compete in the men’s 100m qualifier on Saturday. The semi-finals will take place on Sunday, followed shortly after by the final.

rugby
The 2023 Rugby Americas North Olympic Qualifying Tournament will be held in Langford, British Columbia on Saturday and Sunday. The best women’s team and the best men’s team at the end of the tournament will each receive a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Tournament.
Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia compete in the women’s tournament, which begins on Saturday. These five teams will compete in a round-robin tournament Sunday at 8:32 p.m. ET, where the top two teams will go head-to-head in a gold medal and Olympic qualification match.
Three Tokyo 2020 players will wear Team Canada uniforms this weekend: Olivia Apps, Breanne Nicholas and Julia Greenshields. The full list of Canada women’s team players is available Here.
New Zealand, Australia, the United States and France have already secured their place in the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Tournament, where 12 teams will compete and finish in the top four places in the final standings for the 2022-2023 season. World Rugby Sevens World Series. Canada finished ninth in this ranking that season.
The Canadian women’s team qualified for both the Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016 Olympic tournaments in the rugby sevens tournament’s Olympic debut. The Canadians then had the bronze medal under control.
The men’s tournament consists of seven teams divided into two pools. In Pool B, Canada meets St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica and Barbados. Pool A is up against the United States, Mexico and Bermuda. The top two teams in each group advance to the semi-finals on Sunday at 3:41pm ET. The bronze medal finals will take place at 6:37 p.m. ET. The Gold Medal Finals and Olympic Qualifier is scheduled for 7:38pm ET.
The Canadian men’s rugby sevens team qualified for Tokyo 2020 by winning the previous edition of the Rugby Americas North Olympic Qualifying Tournament, held in the Cayman Islands in July 2019. Three players who will take part in this weekend’s tournament were members of this team either Phil Berna, Cooper Coats and Josiah Morra. New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji and France have already qualified for Paris 2024 by placing in the top four teams at the end of last season’s World Rugby Sevens World Series.
For both women and men, the teams that do not qualify at the end of the Regional Associations’ Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will have one last chance to secure their place in the Olympic Tournament during the last Olympic Hopeful Tournament, its date and Location is yet to be confirmed.

Beach volleyball
This weekend in Hamburg, Germany there will be a stop at the Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 track. Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson are in the main draw of this tournament at World Volleyball’s most prestigious 16-team beach volleyball circuit.
The Canadians, who have been playing together since the start of the season, celebrated their first win at the circuit in front of a crowd of fans during the July 30th stage in Montreal. They had previously won bronze in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in early June and reached the quarter-finals in Gstaad, Switzerland on July 8.
The round-robin game, in which teams are divided into four groups of four, begins on Thursday and continues on Friday. The top team in each group advances directly to the Quarterfinals, while the second and third-placed teams in their group advance to the Round of 16. These games are scheduled for Saturday. The tournament continues on Sunday with the semi-finals. The women’s tournament title final is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET and the third-place final at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Basketball 3×3
The Canadian 3×3 basketball team plays at home while the FIBA women’s 3×3 series makes a stop in Quebec.
The team, which normally consists of Katherine Plouffe, Michelle Plouffe, Paige Crozon and Kacie Bosch (who will be replaced by Jamie Scott for the Quebec stage), is on the road to success, having won the title of their last two tournaments in Edmonton at the end of July and in Prague in early August. The team also won gold in Poitiers, France in June.
The round robin game takes place on Friday. The first-placed teams in each group will advance directly to the semi-finals on Saturday, while the second- and third-placed teams will meet in the quarter-finals. The finale is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

archery
The fourth stage of the Archery World Cup will take place in Paris until August 20th. The competition will take place on the site where the Paris 2024 archery competitions will be held: the Esplanade des Invalides opposite the historic Hôtel des Invalides in Paris’ 7th arrondissement. Organized by World Archery, this World Cup serves as a test event for the next Olympic Games.

Eric Peters, silver medalist at the recent World Championships, competes in the men’s recurve archery tournament, as do Crispin Duenas and Devaang Gupta. The three join forces in the men’s team tournament. Kristine Esebua is the only Canadian to compete in the women’s recurve tournament.
Qualifying took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The playoffs last until Friday. The final is scheduled for Sunday.
