Bare Skin Bar is a beautiful and beneficial skin care brand produced in small batches in Vancouver, BC by founder Cynthia Cyr. Their mantra is “to shine from the goods, not the glitter.”
Tell us about the journey Bare Skin Bar has been on?
It’s been a doozy! What started out as side hustle based on a love for beautiful skincare products has become my full-time passion, leading to a completely new life direction. Not only has this new venture opened up new opportunities for business, but more importantly I have made wonderful connections with equally passionate small-business owners, makers, influencers, and so many talented individuals that it’s hard to put them into a bucket. Being exposed to all of these (you!) wonderful people has really helped me grow Bare Skin Bar from a business perspective and also develop a strong code of business ethics that I am really proud of.
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced to get to where you are now?
Saying goodbye to a stable (and awesome!) job in advertising because I could no longer handle the workload of a full-time job and managing Bare Skin Bar was really hard. I loved the job and the people I worked with so it really felt like I was leaving a family. However, everyone has been super supportive of my decision and I still see my friends regularly; that has really helped when I have ‘One Of Those Days’!
What/who motivates you every day?
Everything is still very new to me, so I don’t feel like I have a hard time getting motivated. Each day is different, sometimes I’m in the studio producing, or I’m out meeting people or on social media, or I’m making deliveries, or I’m trying out new products to see what else is out in the community. I love all of that stuff and it all needs to get done, so I would say my bigger issue is prioritizing. I can spend half a day on Instagram before I realize what time it is!
What does ‘thoughtful gifting’ mean to you?
I love the idea of thoughtful gifting; it was a huge inspiration for me when I was building the brand. I love taking baths, and people would gift me with bath products, but they were always either these crazy glittery neon explosive type things that I do appreciate but felt I had outgrown, or ones that focussed on beautiful ingredients, but I felt the experience was a bit lacking. I developed Bare Skin Bar with four sets of unique ingredients to target unique benefits, with the goal of the user thinking, “this is perfect for me” when they receive it.
